Nature always has an effect and influence on the breed in recent years. In the wild, only the strong survive, the horses went free and were unprotected by man. The stallion (male leader) fought other stallions to protect and maintain his herd. Any weakness threatened his entire life.
Today, man has an important role in breeding is no longer the need for power and survival is so important. Rather, we are able to selectively breed for characteristics that do not like color, race, physique and athletic ability.
When horses were first domesticated, or we need them for transportation or work with animals to help on farms. All work was demanding of horse and man did what he needed horses.
Certainly not strong enough to withstand a thoroughbred pulling a tank in the snow for weeks.
A heavy horse is placed much better suited for the job. And so began mixing and blending of races and bloodlines.
