Understanding the Types of Horse Bit
If you just recently step into the horse lover community, this article about types of bit may be very useful for you. A bit is a device put in a horse’s mouth. The purpose of this device is to allow the horse jockey to control the horse. A bit is not placed on the teeth of the horse, instead it rests on the bars of the mouth of the horse where there is no teeth. Since there are many types and variations of bit, it is important to choose the one which answers the horse’s needs so that it feels comfortable to the horse and therefore can deliver its function properly.
Basically, bits can be distinguished into two categories, snaffle bit and leverage bit. Snaffle bit is a bit which works with direct pressure on the tongue and both lips of the horse. It generally has a single jointed mouthpiece and works with a nutcracker effect. The mouthpiece of the bit can differ numerously but as long as it operates based on the direct pressure, the bit is regarded as a snaffle bit.
Leverage bit is a bit with shanks to create the leverage which then applies the pressure to the horse’s poll, chin groove and mouth. No matter how unique the variation of the mouthpiece is made, all bit with shanks to create a leverage is regarded as a leverage or “curb” bit.
Whatever the type of the bit, once again, it must be matched with the horse’s need. Even the mildest bit can turn to be very harmful for the horse if it is improperly applied and vice versa. The hands of the jockey is also one of the biggest influence in the horse’s comfort. With soft and experienced hands, a severe bit can transmit very gentle commands.
